End Results of the War
Signing the treaty in Paris
Hostilities were halted on August 12, 1898, only after a few months of fighting. The United States and Spain both signed a peace treaty in Paris on December 10, 1898.
Spain recognized Cuba as an independent country. They also ceded Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Phillipines to the United States. When the United States won the Spanish-American War, they claimed status as a global power, and, as a plus, they gained an overseas empire.
