Lasting Effects
The Panama Canal is one of the effects of American Imperialism that is still in use today. The U.S. built the Panama Canal with these goals in mind:
•The goal of increasing the speed of shipping of commerce across the Americas as businesses sought to import and export goods more efficiently.
•The goal of increasing security (Many American officials believed that a canal would speed up the navy from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean).
•The goal of increasing financial profit because the U.S. would be able to charge tolls to foreign customers in order to gain access to the canal.
